What is the difference between my current KVM server and a Cloud KVM server?

Legacy KVM servers are managed by SolusVM and operate on an older OS with limited capabilities. We also are unable to perform certain updates to resolve problems or add new features, including the addition of modern OS templates. Cloud KVM servers operate on OpenStack with the Fleio control panel, and is our currently-supported KVM platform. You'll have access to most all the features you currently have with Legacy KVM, and access to additional features being added in in 2023.

How do I migrate my server?

In most cases, the process is as simple as setting up a new server and migrating your data.

Can you migrate my server for me?

In some cases, yes; however, this process is not automatic. It essentially involves converting your raw image to qcow2 and uploading it to Cloud, and launching an instance from the image. This alone may work for some instances, but others may require manual tuning to boot properly.

Due to the manual time that is involved in this process, and in efforts to keep product costs economical, we have decided that Legacy to Cloud migrations will be a paid service. If this option appeals to you, please open a support ticket so we can provide a time and cost estimate. Please note that in some cases we may not be able to migrate the instance for you at all, at which point, a manual data transfer would be your only option.

Can I keep my IPv4 address?

Yes, as long as your Cloud instance is in the same region as your Legacy instance. After you migrate your data, please open a support ticket to have your IP address(es) moved.

Can I keep my IPv6 address?

Unfortunately, no. Due to differences in the way IPv6 space is assigned between platforms, we cannot move IPv6 addresses from Legacy to Cloud. When you move to Cloud, you will be assigned new IPv6 addresses. While we do not yet offer a full /64 prefix on Cloud, we can add as many IPv6 addresses as you'd like. Please note that routed /64 IPv6 for Cloud will be supported in the upcoming months.

Can I transfer any unused credits to my Cloud account?

Yes. If you decide to migrate to cloud, we are happy to apply any unused credits to your Cloud account. Please open a ticket with us for assistance.
